Kids Planner: Plenty to Do This Memorial Day Weekend

Regardless of this weekend's weather, there is plenty of event, activities both indoor and outdoor to enjoy with your kids this holiday weekend.

Crossing our fingers for a beautiful and sunny Memorial Day weekend. But regardless of Mother Nature, there's plenty of indoor and outdoor fun available for you and your family including a climb in the trees or a movie at the drive-in.

  • Want to see a sheep get a haircut? Old Sturbridge Village is hosting Wool Day on Saturday, May 28 from 9:30 to 5 p.m.  In addition to the hair trimming, visitors will see historians demonstrate how wool is processed: from shearing, scouring and carding to dyeing, spinning and weaving. Memorial Day is also the official kick-off to summer activities and period games. $18 - $20.
  • Check out the night sky at The Discovery Museum (177 Main Street, Acton)  on Sunday, May 29 from 3 to 3:30 p.m.  Join expert planetarium staff as they take visitors on a fantastic journey through the night time sky and help you discover just how much of the universe you can see right from the comfort of your own back yard. The planets, stars and galaxies await you and all you need to do is 'look up' at the skies tonight. Free with admission.
  • Wonder what a tree’s point of view is? Forget just climbing trees – you have to check out theEcotarium’s new Tree Canopy Walkway (222 Harrington Way, Worcester) open on Saturday, May 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Kids and adults can experience what it’s like to walk on the tops of trees or be a treetop scientist.  End your adventure by zipping to the forest floor in our comfy (and secure) chair harness. $10 plus museum admission.
  • My daughter and I spent a sunny afternoon at Garden in the Woods (180 Hemenway Road, Framingham) last weekend and it proved to be a great way to welcome spring-like weather. It’s an easy walk around the grounds with various trials circling the Hop brook, Lily Pond (where we saw turtle families basking in the sun), blooming plants and some rather curious structures including a rock stegosaurus. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for kids. It’s open on Memorial Day Monday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet in the Garden shop for some extra kid-friendly fun.
  • I think I’m just as excited as my kids are to see Kung Fu Panda 2 and Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides. Both are now in theatres but if the weather proves to be wonderful for Memorial Day weekend (it better be!) why not see it outside? Mendon’s drive-in theatre is now open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for $20 per car. (My opinion: You’d save some money and have a totally cool movie experience!)
