Joseph "Appa" Kalinowski Leaves Family in Medfield

Joseph P. Kalinowski of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife is the former Carole Jones, with whom he celebrated his 44th anniversary.


Born in Scranton, son of Connie Cali Kalinowski of Dunmore and the late Joseph A. Kalinowski, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and attended the University of Scranton. He served his country in the Army Reserve. Before retirement, he was employed by Lackawanna County as deputy register of wills and then owned and operated Kalinowski Landscaping Inc. of Dunmore. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore. He was a longtime member of the Dunmore School Board.

He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan who enjoyed going to Lambeau Field with his family and friends. He enjoyed going to Penn State football games with Bobby Ragnacci, Joe Durkin and Al O'Donnell, and loved vacationing in Naples, Fla., where he was president of the Key Royal Condo Association. He enjoyed sitting on the porch for coffee with his neighbors, Tana and Don Alunni and Ann Marie and Casper Colo. His true passion was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Appa." He enjoyed every birthday party, sporting event and other activity involving his grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Atnip of the Hershey Medical Center as well as the doctors at Regional Hospital of Scranton and staff of the intensive care unit. The family also wishes to thank the Rev. David Cappelloni of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish.

Also surviving are two sons, attorney Joseph Kalinowski and wife, Natalie, Dunmore; and Matthew Kalinowski and wife, Jennifer, Spring Brook Twp.; a daughter, Elizabeth Sample and husband, David, Dunmore; two brothers, Richard Kalinowski and wife, Delphine, Olyphant; and Anthony Kalinowski and wife, Marlene, Medfield; five grandsons, Jacob and Luke Kalinowski, Matthew and Joshua Kalinowski and Conner Sample; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
