Grab & Go: First Weekend of Summer Celebrations

From dragonflies in Natick to vintage baseball on George's Island, there are lots to do during the first official weekend of summer!

  • Join the Rocky Woods (in Medfield) for the Great American Backyard campout on Saturday, June 25. This event is perfect for first-timers or those simply looking to reconnect with the outdoors in a pleasant setting. Campsites are a short walk (300 yards) from the parking lot and you can learn how easy it is to spend a night outdoors. Take part in group activities or explore Rocky Woods on your own. Bring a fishing pole and fish in Chickering pond. An optional cookout Saturday night will be provided and cooked community style. After dinner join a Trustees Ranger for an evening hike or share stories and songs around the campfire while roasting marshmallows. The price for a campsite is $30 (up to four individuals)
  • The Chinatown Main Street festival (Chinatown on Tyler, Harrison, Beach, and Hudson Streets) is being held on Sunday, June 26 from 11 .m. to 5 p.m. It’s free. Take the kids and check out the Chinese dough art, Chinese opera, folk dancing, martial arts and lots of other performances.
  • Summertime means concerts on the common and Norwood is kicking off their summer program on Sunday, June 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. Gather up friends and neighbors and head to the Walter J. Dempsey Memorial Bandstand on the Town Common (corner of Washington & Nahatan Streets) for summer concerts every Sunday. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Rain or shine!
  • Discover the amazing number of dragonflies and butterflies that make Broadmoor (280 Eliot Street, Natick) home! Just what is a damselfly? How do dragonflies survive the winter? Fun with Butterflies and Dragonflies will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Pre-registration required. $10-$12 for adults, $6-$8 for kids.
  • See the game of baseball as it was played during the Civil War era on Sunday, June 26 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at George’s Island in Boston. Play or watch how one of America’s most beloved sports has become a favorite summer pastime for free. The public park ferries to the Boston Harbor Islands operate seven days a week, and depart hourly from Boston’s Long Wharf North. To purchase ferry tickets, go to the new Boston Harbor Islands Pavilion on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway (across from the Long Wharf Marriott).
