Grab and Go: Celebrating Mom with the Kids

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Mom this weekend - from a walk and breakfast in Sharon to a duckling parade in Boston.

1. Based on the book Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey, children and their families will retrace the steps of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and their family of eight ducklings during the Duckling Day Parade at the Boston common on Sunday, May 8 at noon. Led by the Harvard University Marching Band, children relive the adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard dressed as one of their favorite characters from the book. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Shaw Memorial in front of the State House. $25 donation per family includes snacks and a toy.

2. Of the thousands of flowering plants in theArboretum (125 Arborway, Boston,) only one, the lilac, is singled out each year for a daylong celebration on Sunday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Free tours of the lilacs, dance performances, picnicking (allowed on this special day only), and family activities make for a memorable day.

3. Celebrate Mom (and celebrity animal moms!) at Stone Zoo (Stoneham) on Sunday, May 8 with FREE ADMISSION for all mothers throughout the day and goodie bags for the first 100 moms. Complimentary goodie bags will be filled with fun gifts, and discount offers for children’s music and books, cleaning and meal services, stationery and gifts, and custom photography and videos - all drawn from local, independent mom-owned businesses.  Free admission for Moms, $ 14 adults at Franklin Park, $11 at Stone; $8 children Franklin Park, $7 at Stone, free children two and under.

5. Now in its 12th year, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer, has evolved and grown into one of the sweetest weeks Boston and the Greater Boston area experiences. Through May 8, visit any of the 270 participating restaurants, bakeries and cafes across the region and purchase one of their fine tasty treats and part of the proceeds will go towards researching a cure for breast cancer.
