More New Fresh Produce during August at Farmers Market

It seems ironic that the summer market season comes to a close as more vegetables and fruits appear on the stands at the Medfield Farmers Market, sponsored by the First Parish UU Church on North St. each Thursday from 2 until 6:30.  Unfortunately as the harvests increase in variety and abundance this month, the closing of the market is scheduled for August 29.  In spite of rain and excessive heat last month, the regular customer base has increased and the weekly market is judged a success by the committee already looking toward  2014.

Many towns and farms have their own markets and the thought of supporting and eating local has become very popular throughout the New England states.  Wards Berry and Langwater Farms have brought a display of fresh picked corn, tomatoes, and now string beans, broccoli, eggplants and beets as well as varied sizes of cucumbers, types of summer squash and green leafy kale, chard and beet greens.  There are fresh peaches, plenty of blueberries and August is also a month for melons Wards enhances their booth with a line of freshly baked sweet breads and honey.

Although there is no meat vendor, there is fresh fish available in the Jordan Brothers Seafood truck and that truck proved to be a very popular new addition to this summer’s market.  Another popular new feature this year is the doggy treats offered at the Bark Back Bakery stand.  These are all gluten free and home-made.  Rounding out the food items are Garden Farm’s gourmet jams, jellies, mustards and relishes.  As the fall comes around Garden Farms makes up attractive gift boxes for the holidays.  Interested customers should talk to the vendor to see how to order these specialty items before the market closes.  Although not on site every week, Wild Daisy Soaps is represented at the market several times a month with soaps, lotions, and other novelty items made with natural, non toxic ingredients.

Medfield’s Farmers Market is a great addition to the Thursday scene in the community and community support of it and its vendors is important.  Continue to visit the market through this month and eat local and healthy.
