Medfield Historic Trolley Tour June 8

Annual Discover Medfield History Day Tour to focus on State Hospital and its restored Cemeteries

The annual Discover Medfield History Day on Saturday, June 8, 2013 will be a departure from the usual format in which visitors see historic Medfield from a trolley. Medfield’s Town Historian, Richard DeSorgher, tour guide for this special day sponsored by the Medfield Employer and Merchant Organization, has announced the theme for the  day “Remember Us for we too have loved, lived and laughed”– A History of Medfield State Hospital Cemeteries. Riders will leave the bus to visit two tranquil sites.  The bus will be handicap accessible.

Tickets will go on sale later this month at Medfield Properties on North St. and must be purchased for a specific tour. The first tour will begin at 9 A.M.; the final one will be at 2 P.M., returning by 3:30.  The ticket price will be $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for children under 12.   All trolleys depart from the front of the Dwight Derby House on Frairy St.

DeSorgher has a reputation for making history come alive: as a former Social Studies teacher, as the program curator for the Medfield Historical Society, as the author of a book on Medfield’s history and as a weekly columnist for local newspapers, both printed and digital. He was a member of the committee that researched the information concerning patients interred in Medfield’s State Hospital Cemeteries. Because of the different format this year there will be only five tours of approximately one and one half hour in length.

DeSorgher will be working with the MEMO committee consisting of representatives from The Math Connection, Beginning Years and Prospect Mortgage Co.

The local business organization is similar to a Chamber of Commerce.  Discover Medfield History Day is one of the seasonal events sponsored by MEMO, organized in 1979.  The purpose of the organization is to promote local businesses, services and professionals in Medfield and to provide a network where they can share ideas and business practices.

MEMO also offers concerts in the Gazebo Park on summer Thursday nights, the annual Discover Medfield Day in September, a Christmas tree lighting/carol singing and Santa parade in December. The organization also honors local residents serving in the military by flying flags along the central business district on each major holiday and provides annual scholarships to graduating seniors at Medfield  and Tri County Regional Vocational High Schools. All events are provided with the help of individual MEMO member sponsors.  Sponsorships are available for Discover Medfield History Day by calling 508-562-1332.
