Three Minutes Across the Counter With: Jim James

We spent three minutes across the counter with Jim James, owner of Park Street Books in Medfield.

You may know that he owns Park Street Books in Medfield, but did you know he was also previously a stand-up comedian? Spend three minutes behind the counter with Medfield business owner Jim James.

Patch: How did you get your first start in business?

Jim: I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and I was a preschool teacher for 13 years and that led to opening a children's book and toy store that focuses on fun and educational books and toys.

P: How did your parents influence you as a business owner?

J: My dad was a career army soldier, so we moved around a great deal. That allowed us to live in many places (four different high schools) and to meet many people. I love working with and talking with people.

P: How long have you lived here?

J: We moved to Medfield 13 years ago.

P: What's your favorite thing about living here?

J: Great schools and close to lots of great cultural activities.

P: What's a business mistake you've made that later you were glad you did?

J: I learn from my mistakes, and there have been many. Each time, I think, "At least I won't do that again!" Our biggest mistake was to locate our first store in a place with very poor parking. Parking is vitally important for a retail shop.

P: Tell us something about yourself that most of your neighbors don't know.

J: I used to do stand up comedy. Was actually a national finalist in the Certs College Comedy Competition. I have performed in coffee shops, comedy clubs, theaters, and even a grocery store (where the stage was made out of cases of Pepsi). I think I would still be doing comedy if I had been funny.

P: What's the best business advice you've ever received?

J: Do not try to be all things to all people. Focus on the things you do best.

P: What advice would you give to a small business owner just starting out?

J: Follow your passion. Do what you love. If you don't believe in what you are selling, you will not have the great enthusiasm you need to have to ride through the bumpy times. And there will be bumpy times. Never give up. Power through anything and you will come out stronger on the other side.

P: What do you look for when you hire?

J: We hire from our customer base. We look for outgoing book lovers who take initiative. We have sixteen of the best booksellers anywhere. We pay more than the big box stores but our employees have more responsibility than just working a cash register.
