CVS MinuteClinic Now at Medfield Location

"Quick and easy" CVS department doing well in Medfield.

The MinuteClinic arrived in Medfield last month and is already going strong.

“I think the reason the MinuteClinic is so successful is because it’s quick and easy.  A lot of people are intimidated about going to the doctor but [MinuteClinic] is non-threatening,” said Mary Petruzzi, a nurse practitioner and manager of operations for Massachusetts South clinics, of the 21st MinuteClinic to open in Massachusetts, and the sixth in Norfolk County, with the closest being in Medway.

“We provide easy access to acute non-urgent care right in the community.  They don’t have to travel, they get high quality expert care and the price is right even if they don’t have insurance,” said Petruzzi, adding that MinuteClinic is in network with many insurance companies.

MinuteClinic practitioners specialize in family health care and are trained to diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus and bronchial infections. Skin conditions and minor infections are treated and common vaccinations for influenza, tetanus, pneumonia, and Hepatitis A & B are available at most locations, according to a recent press release.

According to its website, MinuteClinic walk-in clinics are staffed by nurse practitioners who provide treatment for common family illnesses and injuries and administer vaccinations.  Those practictioners can:

  • Diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat, pink eye and infections of the ears, nose and throat
  • Provide common vaccinations for flu, pneumonia, pertussis, and hepatitis, among others
  • Treat minor injuries such as minor burns and suture & staple removal and skin conditions such as poison ivy and ringworm

Most services are available for those age 24 months and older, but ages for specific services may vary.  In Massachusetts, the MinuteClinic does not administer any childhood immunizations other than the flu vaccine.

There are limitations to the conditions and treatments and include, among others, “no x-rays or suturing or treatment for more serious conditions like you might find in an emergency room,” said Brent Burkhardt, a spokesperson for MinuteClinic.

No appointments are required at MinuteClinic and most health insurance is accepted. For patients paying cash or credit, treatment prices are posted at each medical center and at MintueClinic's website.  An examination for a minor illness, minor injury or a skin condition is between $79 and $89; vaccinations are between $30 and $147; and wellness services are between $27 and $59.

The MinuteClinic is open Monday through Friday 8am to 7pm (closed from 1-2pm for lunch), Saturday from 9am to 5:30pm (closed 1-1:30pm for lunch) and Sunday from 10am to 5:30pm (closed 1-1:30pm for lunch).

“We try to keep the practitioners in the communities the best we can but it’s usually a group of three or four…with an open-seven-day schedule,” said Petruzzi.
