Company Interested in Opening Medical Marijuana Dispensary

Bio-Care Collaborative has contacted Medfield Town Hall about a space for a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Strata Bank property.

A second company is eyeing Medfield as a location for a medical marijuana-related business. Bio-Care Collaborative Inc. has requested a meeting with town planning officials to discuss a location for a medical marijuana dispensary.

The proposed site is the former Strata Bank branch office at 18 N. Meadows RD., said town Planner Sarah Raposa. But because the former bank is not in the Industrial Extensive (IE) zone, a medical marijuana dispensary would be prohibited in that location.

Only Town Meeting voters could change the zoning for medical marijuana related businesses. Voters last year authorized the businesses, by special permit, in the IE zone only. The zone runs along a portion of Route 27.

The applicant has not yet submitted documentation to Medfield officials, but in a brief conversation, Raposa said, indicated an interest in the former Strata Bank site, as well as other undisclosed locations in Medfield.

Raposa said the company representative did not describe the application, other than to characterize it as a med-marijuana dispensary. Bio-Care Collaborative is one of  12 businesses that have applied for a state license in Norfolk County, and has been cleared to submit a second phase application, having passed a background check. The company's agent is John Madigan.

Medfield also is the identified location for a medical marijuana cultivation business, proposed by an undisclosed company, represented by attorney Robert Carp. That application also has not been filed with town officials.

According to the state Department of Public Health, which is regulating the industry, 12 companies have indicated they want to locate a facility somewhere in Norfolk County. The state does not require the applicants at this point to pinpoint a location. Carp would not disclose the name of the company he represents, which is interested in Medfield, but said it is on the list of 12.

The list includes: Apex Compassion & Wellness Center, Baystate Medical Enterprises,  Bio-Care Collaborative Inc., Commonwealth Biopharm, G2 New England, Growing Health Wellness Center Inc., Mass Relief Inc., Mass. Compassionate Patient Care Corp., Massmedicum Corp., New England Treatment Access Inc., The Anita W. Compassion Center, and The CAS Foundation Inc.
