FOSI and COA Combined Event Was a Blast

FOSI and COA COMBINED EVENT ON SATURDAY FEB 16TH WAS A BLAST

Last Saturday February 16th Medfield Council on Aging (COA) celebrated its 5th anniversary at the current site but as if that were not enough they combined it with Valentine’s Day celebration for the owners of the building, Medfield older adults. It was a blast. The hall was never as full; and yet there were a hundred smiling faces. (Follow the link for pictures to prove the point).

The Medfield Council on Aging, otherwise known as the Center, moved to one Ice House Road January 7, 2008, a little over 5 years ago from the Pfaff Center on North Street. Fortunately, the Medfield community recognizes the importance of their young and old The community had over the years established that it cared for the young by building and maintaining one of the best schools in the state, and one of the best youth activities. It realized that it had met only one of the measures of a community and that the care of her older adults was needed. That was why it built a “state of the art” Center that has become an attraction not only to Medfield residents but also to the surrounding towns.

The evening started promptly at 7:00pm with hors’douves. Timmy Brown had set up his musical equipment and cleared his throat and moms and pops were ready to boogey. They made trips to the get cheese, crackers, pepperoni, grapes or their beverage choice of beer or wine. It will not be long before conversations started to flow freely and feet inched forward to the dance floor; and they did in large numbers. There was not a minute when any inch of the dance floor was not occupied.

And then more food flowed: spring rolls, chicken fingers, quiche, etc, passed around by the team of Cheryl, Bill, Roberta, and others. The temptation for the seniors was not to overdo it as food flowed from a bottomless pit. Drinks flowed also, wine, beer or soda through generous donations. This being less expensive than at any beer parlor, any place.

OMG! It was also a fashion show! The ladies attired in all colors of the rainbow, with red prevailing, often red over black. There were dark suits but few ties. I started wondering if there had been a ban on ties. Skirts and blouse, pant suites, few dresses were the common attire.

The music was definitely a major draw as many pieces played at wedding ceremonies were repeated. Couples remembered their first Valentine’s Day and were pushed to the dance floor. The highlight was the 50th marriage anniversary of the Shapiro’s. They opened the dance floor and as they danced, other couples remembered their 40th, 30th, 20th, etc and joined until there was almost no room for more dancers. It was hilarious! One wondered what the first day of marriage was for these folks. They held each other closely and tenderly, placed their jaws on the shoulders of their partners, pitted head against head. You can tell a romance when you see one. Then more music: waltz, twist, foxtrot, line dance, live songs by Timmy, whatever you wanted you got.

Ms. Roberta Lynch, the Director of COA, eventually grabbed the microphone. It would be about 9.00 pm and summoned Bill and Cheryl to join her. It was time for raffles. 50/50 raffle was for $120.00 won by George…. And there were fourteen other draws. Many people went home with winnings.

All good things would eventually come to an end. The end came with the music piece “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. It was a wonderful evening. Everyone looking forward to the rest of 2013 and beyond!
