Viewfinder: Spring Music in the Air Around Medfield

Plenty of scenes from a string of recent concerts in Medfield. Check them out here.

A single photograph often tells a story. Here's our look through the Viewfinder at recent concerts around town.

  • Medfield High School Spring Concert:  Students from Medfield High School and Blake Middle School were welcoming spring into the air of the Lowell Mason Auditorium during the Medfield Music Department's Spring Concert. The concert is often viewed as a "preview" for the eighth graders headed to high school next fall. As part of the "coming of age" process, the eighth graders get the opportunity to perform a song with the high school musicians.
  • Lowell Mason Auditorium Concert: Medfield residents gathered in the MHS Auditorium to celebrate and honor the father of music education in public schools by renaming the facility after him – The Lowell Mason Auditorium. The dedication ceremony, organized by the Lowell Mason Foundation, celebrated Mason’s legacy with various musical selections from the Boston Latin School Orchestra, Boston Latin School Chamber Choir, Medfield High School Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble.
  • Stoneybatter Band: Band members include George Arata of Framingham on the Bouzouki – a Greek string instrument that found its way into traditional Irish music in the late 1960s – Jim Buchanan of Millis on the fiddle, Jim Gleason of Holliston on the Irish (wooden) flute, Pelham Norville of Framingham on the Uillean pipes – similar to bagpipes, literally ‘pipes of the elbow’ – and Joey Sullivan of Rhode Island on the Bodhran (Irish drum). The April 3rd Medfield Public Library performance included traditional Irish music, original compositions by band members Buchanan and Gleason, and Irish folk songs including “Paddy’s Not at Work Today.”
  • New England Brass Band: Under the direction of renowned arranger, Stephen Bulla, the 30-plus -member brass band entertained a rapt audience on April 3, with musical selections from composers such as J.S. Bach, Kevin Norbury, Howard Evens and Stephen Bulla, himself at the United Church of Christ. The New England Brass Band, formed in 1988, performs up to a dozen concerts per year throughout New England and draws volunteer musicians from a wide geographic area.
