'Old Friends' Pack Zullo Gallery to See Ted Larkin Perform

Crowd of 70 was on hand March 5 to see Medfield native, Ted Larkin, return to town and perform at Zullo Gallery.

Friends, family, former classmates, and a few new faces packed the Zullo Gallery March 5 to enjoy a reunion concert with Medfield native Teddy Larkin and Millis resident Rick Dillon, who hadn’t played together for 22 years.

Also joining the duo was Gerry Bellegarde of Stoneham with whom Larkin has played for 20 years.

“It was great to play with Rick and Gerry Bellegarde again,” said Larkin, 47.  “I also liked seeing old friends who came with the kids too.  It was nice to meet the young generation of musicians and parents who support the arts.”

One of those old friends Larkin ran into was Mary Dugan, who was in marching band and stage band with Larkin at Medfield High School in the early 1980s. She was two years behind Larkin who graduated in 1982.

Bellegrade enjoyed the reunion with Larkin and the opportunity to play alongside Dillon.

"This was my first time playing with Rick [Dillon] and hopefully not the last," said Bellegarde. "His playing brought new personality to familiar tunes. It was a pleasure for me to do the show and slip back into Ted's songs which I've known for many years.  They fit like a comfortable old shirt; I just let my body take over and remember them."

“Ted was just a great guy, and he was always a great musician; this is the first time I’ve seen him in years,” she said, noting there were many former MHS schoolmates in the audience. “He’s very talented, he can do anything; when I knew him he played a lot of drums.”

During this music career, Larkin said he was “pretty successful” as a drummer but that his real passion was writing – he shared many of those songs during an acoustic set on Saturday night.

Larkin described the band’s music as “more on the folk side, based around Americana, focusing on acoustic guitar, harmonica, mandolin and storytelling” all of which the 70 audience members seemed to enjoy.

“We saw a lot of friends from over the years and enjoyed playing for them,” said Dillon. “Teddy and I are definitely looking forward to future gigs together, as well as continued collaborations.”
