Medfield Music Department Presents A Spring Concert

The Medfield High School Concert Choir, Eighth Grade Chorus, Blake Middle School Eighth Grade String Orchestra and Medfield High School Orchestra performed on March 31.

While snow was accumulating outside Medfield High School on March 31, students from Medfield High School and Blake Middle School were welcoming spring into the air of the Lowell Mason Auditorium during the Medfield Music Department's Spring Concert.

The concert is often viewed as a "preview" for the eighth graders headed to high school next fall. As part of the "coming of age" process, the eighth graders get the opportunity to perform a song with the high school musicians.

"The eighth graders get to join the high school on stage as a preview of what next year will be like," said Medfield music teacher Sharon Woodworth. "We have a lot of great programs and hope to see the eighth graders next year. This is a neat opportunity for everyone to play together."

The eighth grade chorus joined the MHS Concert Choir to perform the song "Come in From the Firefly Darkness" by Amy Feldman Bernon. The High School Concert Choir also performed; "He, Watching Over Israel" by Felix Mendelssohn, "Sure on This Shining Night" by Smauel Barber; "Sicut Cervus" by Giovanni Palestrina; "Take Me to the Water" by Rollo Dilworth.

"Take Me to the Water" was performed brilliantly by the Concert Choir and got the crowd involved, clapping along to the rhythm.

The Blake Middle School eighth grade string orchestra performed three pieces: "Mythos" by Soon Hee Newbold. This piece sounded like it should have been included in the score of the Pirates of the Caribbean films and was performed very well by the orchestra. See the video of their performance. The second piece was one we all know: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" arranged by Richard Stephan and the orchestra concluded its night with "Mariachi!" by John O'Neill.

The Medfield High School Orchestra performed three pieces as well: "Adelante! Adelante!"  by Chuck Elledge, "Pavane" by Gabriel Faure/John O'Neill and the famous "Hoe Down" by Aaron Copland/Stephen Bulla. The orchestra performed "Hoe Down" to perfection, bringing the uptempo piece to life.
