Award-Winning Brass Ensemble to Perform in Medfield

New England Brass Band will perform April 3 at the second annual Elmer O. Portmann Memorial Concert at the United Church of Christ.

The award-winning New England Brass Band (NEEB), a 30-piece brass and percussion ensemble, will be the featured performers at the second annual Elmer O. Portmann Memorial Concert at on Main Street in Medfield, on Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m.

Performing under the direction of Stephen Bulla, the chief arranger for the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, the NEEB has captured first-prize honors in several categories in the North American Brass Band Association national championships, and has released an acclaimed series of compact disc recordings.

Among the 30 instruments featured at the concert will be a brand-new bass trombone, made possible in part by the generosity of S. E. Shires & Co., a Massachusetts firm known throughout the world for manufacturing brass instruments of exceptional quality.  Company founder Steve Shires, a member of The United Church of Christ, performs on trombone regularly at the Medfield church.  Another brass enthusiast and member of the church, Edward Otting, will be honored at the event in recognition of more than five decades of devotion to the philanthropic work of the Shriners, whose famous hospital provides care for burn victims at no cost.
