What Was Up with the Big Tent on Main Street?

Good question. What do you think about the answer?

If you drove through downtown on Saturday, you might have been confused by the white tent set up near the intersection of Main and North/Pleasant Streets.  The sides were drawn, and there was no one around.

Or so it seemed. Actually, art was being created inside.

After just a few hours, the tent was removed to reveal the fully-covered utility box. The project had been started a week ago but could not be finished because of the chilly temperatures. The tent was set up to keep the box warm while artist Franklin Marvel finished the installation.

On Nov. 23, two sides of the box were covered:

  1. with a photo of the old Monks building (across the street, known as "Monks Block"), and
  2. the street side was covered with a picture of "Jack," the faithful companion of Dr. Arthur Mitchell who was Medfield’s beloved doctor for 48 years, according to Town Historian Richard DeSorgher. The painting of Jack was created by John Austin Sands Monks.
On Saturday, Nov. 30, the final two sides were covered with a extended photo of sheep -- something Monks was know for painting well.

TELL US: There are a total of six utility boxes around Medfield that will be covered with historic photos. What do you think about the project? Tell us in the comment section.
