UPDATED: Luminary Display Pays Tribute to 9/11 Anniversary

The 117-bag display was approximately nine feet tall and 13 feet wide and was composed of red, white and blue luminary bags.

A patriotic luminary display appeared on the lawn of the police and fire departments on Sept. 11 as a result of the efforts of Medfield’s American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Beckwith Post 110.

“Our chaplain, Michelle Doucette, thought of the idea,” said Auxiliary President Lisa Marie Donovan. “We wanted to do something to commemorate the 10th anniversary [of 9/11], and wanted to do something for the police and fire departments to show them how much we appreciate everything they do on a daily basis to keep our community safe and secure. ... We thought the lawn of the police and fire stations would be a very appropriate place to do so.”

The 117-bag display was approximately nine feet tall and 13 feet wide and was composed of red, white and blue luminary bags. Additional bags graced the base of the flagpole at the entrance to the and departments.

Firefighters on duty Sunday night, said the display was well-received and appreciated by all.

“We were hoping it would be well-received,” said Donovan. “We ran into a few people as we were setting it up and taking it down ... people were excited and touched, and that made us feel good.”

Donovan said the Auxiliary also put together a large “basket of goodies” for the public safety departments that included granola bars, chips, beverages, and – appropriately – “Lifesavers” candies and more.

The Women’s Auxiliary is a group of about 30 members that raises money for scholarships, including an opportunity to attend Girls State for a week to learn about government, the Steven Hinkley Award, and an ALA scholarship. The group hold programs at the Veterans’ Hospital, help with the senior holiday party by making desserts, provide luminaries on Veterans’ Day, participate in the Memorial Day parade and hands out flags.

The group’s membership is growing, said Donovan, adding that they are also becoming more involved with the Fisher House, which provides free or low-cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers, says the site.

The first meeting of the Beckwith Post 110 Women’s Auxiliary will be Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend to learn more about the Auxiliary. For more information, contact Donovan at (508) 359-2455.
