Selectman Calls for One Map of All Town-Owned Land

Selectman Richard DeSorgher says the town should have one map of all the town's open space land.

With the recent purchase of Red Gate Farm, Selectman Richard DeSorgher says the town should have one map that shows all of its town-owned land.

DeSorgher suggests all town departments should collaborate with Trustees of Reservations to “draw up a map and master plan of where the open space is in Medfield.”

“If we can outline where it is and mark the trails, we can make greater use of all of our open space,” he said.

Approximately 40 percent of the town of Medfield is considered open space.

In the weeks leading up to October’s special town meeting and special election where voters agreed to purchase and finance 30 acres at Red Gate Farm, many residents were surprised to learn the town already owns more than 20 acres of land – known as the “Scout land” – abutting the latest purchase.

“Not only would a map be good for our own citizens in town so that we know where the different spaces of open space are located, but I know the Cultural District and the Economic Development Committee both talked about trying to use the town’s open space as a marketing tool to bring people to Medfield,” DeSorgher said.
