Second Effort Needed to Clear Snow At Lowell Mason Site Today

Lowell Mason Foundation asking for volunteers to clear snow from site of future Lowell Mason House on Green Street at 1 p.m. today.

A second effort is needed Sunday afternoon to clear snow from the new basement of the future site of the Lowell Mason House after volunteers gathered Saturday to clean up the area of 39 Green St.

"I helped out at the future Lowell Mason House site [Saturday] morning and afternoon along with many others," said Medfield Chief of Police Robert Meaney Jr. "There is another effort needed that is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. The concrete forms and construction debris were cleared out but what remains is a large pile of snow in the middle of the basement."

Meaney said Saturday's volunteers shoveled the snow from the edges to a pile in the middle of the basement and "now needs to be removed from the basement and away from the foundation so the waterproofing and backfilling can help beginning Monday."

"It’s more than just flinging the snow over the top of the foundation because that will interfere with backfilling," Meaney said.

Those who are able to help are asked to be at 39 Green St. at 1 p.m. today and to bring shovels and wheelbarrows if possible.

"A method of getting the wheelbarrows up the banking will be figured out tomorrow but help is needed," Meaney said.

The expected move of the Lowell Mason house is scheduled for Feb. 22, but that date could change if the site is not cleared in time for workers this week.

Bob Luttman, of the Lowell Mason Foundation, is asking for people over the age of 16 to volunteer.

"We need to dig the snow out. Then the contractors can resume work on Monday," Luttman said. "The work requires climbing in and out of the basement and, of course, digging. It will be a bit of work. Consider it a good mid-winter workout."

If you are able to help, meet Luttman at Green Street today and "do as much as you are able," he said.
