Program Celebrates Grandparents' Day with Nature at Rocky Woods

The program No Grandchild Left Inside recently celebrated Grandparents' Day at Rocky Woods in Medfield.

Several generations took time out of their busy schedules on Sunday, Sept. 11 to celebrate National Grandparents Day at as part of the fourth annual No Grandchild Left Indoors program co-sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations and the Medfield Public Library.

Elizabeth Weston, 5 of Westwood, said she enjoyed the stories – including The Busy Tree by Jennifer Ward, and The Grandma Book and The Grandpa Book by Todd Parr – read by Medfield’s Children’s Librarian Ann Russo. Elizabeth said she would definitely like to go back to Rocky Woods again.

“I liked that we walked in a circle,” she said after a hike and scavenger hunt around Chickering Pond.

After the stories and before embarking on the hike, everyone in the group randomly chose a crayon and was then challenged to match that color with something in nature. Those who had green or brown had an easier time than those who drew blue or pink.

“There was a mushroom I’d never seen before," said Jacob Enos, 12 of Medfield. "It was bright red with yellow in the center.”

The hike was led by Trustees of Reservations engagement coordinator, Susan Ekstrom, who pointed out plants, flowers, trees, turtles and garner snakes along the trail. She also identified a yellow birch tree showing hikers how the Native Americans used the tree’s small branches to clean their teeth.

The program ended with a healthy snack and a homemade birdfeeder of pinecones, peanut butter and birdseed.
