NWS: Snow Expected This Weekend; Power Outages Possible

The National Weather Service says three to five inches of snow in Medfield this weekend is possible, with two to five inches of snow likely throughout the Commonwealth.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Norfolk County, including Medfield.

The storm, which may stretch from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, could dump three to five inches of snow throughout the area.

NWS predicted the storm will be a mix of rain and snow, beginning Saturday afternoon before changing to just snow after 7 p.m. Leaves on the trees coupled with heavy wet snow may cause branches to break with power outages possible.

Medfield Town Adminstrator Michael Sullivan said Friday he was "concerned" of the potential storm because it could create quite a mess for the town to cleanup and issues at .

"During Tropical Storm Irene a wire to our generator [in Town Hall] blew out," Sullivan said. "There's concern that if we lose power, the switch to our generator won't turn on and Town Hall won't have power or phone service."

Sullivan said while most people enjoy the "beauty" of a first snowfall, it has lost its luster to him, which he blames on his day job.

"I've been [Medfield's Town Administrator] for almost 40 years," Sullivan said. "When I see snow I think about how much it is going to cost the town and the cleanup that will be needed. Maybe when I retire I will get to enjoy snow again."

The NWS is also predicting strong northeast winds.

“The potential for heavy impact with this early-season winter storm is possible," reported the NWS. "Heavy wet snow could cause hazardous driving conditions as well as widespread power outages.”

To the surprise of many, half an inch of snow fell on Medfield Thursday night, providing an unusual sense of winter in October.
