Meet the President of Medfield's Lions Club

Steven Kramer, president of the Medfield Lions Club, went one-on-one with Medfield Patch.

Steven Kramer is the new President of the Medfield chapter of the Lions Club

Kramer, 58, became a Lion in the early 1990s and served as vice president for many years.

“I am looking forward to taking on the challenge this year of continuing the successful programs we have run in the past as well as increasing the membership and scope of activities in which we participate,” said Kramer, an attorney by profession.

Kramer became a Lion after moving to Medfield in 1988.

“My decision [to join] was prompted by the urging of a neighbor who was a member and my recollection of my father's membership as a Rotarian for many years where I grew up in Greenfield,” he said.

Fellow Lion Scott Colwell provided some insight to Kramer's tenure with the organization.

“Steve has been a member of the Medfield Lions Club for a long time and has served in various positions,” said Colwell. “He helped initiate some great programs, including Community Teens which focuses on bringing together high school students with members of the town who need assistance … He is a great example of someone who cares about the town and is more than willing to give something back to the community.”

Kramer said there are many reasons people should consider joining the Lions Club, noting it is the largest service organization in the country and concentrates on raising funds for eye research (its primary beneficiary), helps many local organizations and individuals who need a jump start to aid their efforts, and contributes to NEADS, an organization which trains dogs to help both blind individuals and Veterans who need assistance in their daily lives. They also award scholarships to students and others who attend local camps.

“Combined with the philanthropic goals of the club, there is an excellent sense of camaraderie between members who have a great time together, meeting once a month and combining efforts to make a difference for a lot of people in Medfield and beyond,” said Kramer, adding that fraternal organizations like the Lions are often misrepresented on television as “a group of middle-aged men who meet and enjoy a good time at meetings” to the exclusion of others.

“The Lions Club is not that type of group,” he said. “We have many women and younger members who make the group a versatile and enjoyable organization for men and women to join.”

Kramer is also active in local town government, and served eight years on the Medfield School Committee.  He lives in Medfield with his wife Celeste and two children Jake (a junior at Colby College) and Haley (a junior at Medfield High School).
