Medfield Resident Lindsey Smith Selected by NBC as Intern for Summer Olympics

Lindsey Smith graduated from MHS in 2010 and will cover the Summer Olympics for NBC from New York City.

Medfield resident Lindsey Smith, a 2010 graduate of Medfield High School, has been selected by NBC Sports as an intern for the 2012 Summer Olympics starting later this month in London.

Smith is a junior majoring in television-radio at Ithaca College.  She will be one of 35 students from the college who will serve in an essential behind-the-scenes role for the world's biggest athletic event.

Ithaca is one of only a handful of colleges and universities nationwide with which NBC partners to recruit interns for its Olympics coverage. Thirty-three of the interns are from the Roy H. Park School of Communications, with one each coming from the School of Music and School of Health Sciences and Human Performance.

"Our students are consistently recognized by internship sites for their ability to immediately enter into professional environments and begin making significant contributions," said Diane Gayeski, dean of the Park School.

“Working side-by-side with professionals on a major international event will be the latest of many achievements that these students can add to their portfolio of experiences," she said.

Half of the students, including Smith, will be based at NBC's 30 Rock headquarters in New York City, while the rest will travel to London for their intern assignments. Some will be working at specific events, including the high-profile sports of basketball, gymnastics, swimming and track and field.  Others will handle tasks such as reviewing video for what is known as the Highlights Factory, which the network developed to package and distribute coverage through multiple media platforms.

Ithaca College students have previously interned at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy; 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China; and 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. To read more about the history of the IC-NBC Olympics partnership, visit www.ithaca.edu/olympics2010.
