Holiday Season Quickly Approaching in Medfield

MEMO's annual holiday tree lighting ceremony will be held on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at Baxter Park.

Although Christmas decorations and music begin to appear earlier and earlier each year, MEMO, the Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization, is consistent about waiting to usher the town into the season on the first Friday and Saturday in December.

Of course, that always requires a group of dedicated members to replace bulbs in the light strings and to hang these festive decorations for several weeks earlier in preparation for Dec. 2 and 3.

"We had our annual re-bulbing ceremony that we do every year," said Medfield selectman Mark Fisher, who volunteered to check the strings of lights. "We borrow the Wheelock School cafeteria and pull out all the lights and check all the bulbs and replace the bulbs and get them all ready."

The annual winter outing for families and friends begins with the tree lighting and carol singing on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., when the switch is thrown for the large Christmas tree that transforms the park into a wonderland of lights and music.

A new feature this year will be the performances by four winners of the Joy to the World Singing Contest, judged earlier in the week following auditions. This is also the event when children ages 4 and up may sign up for the lottery that selects six elves to ride on Santa’s sleigh in Saturday’s parade, beginning at 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 at . The parade marches up South Street, along Main Street and down Park Street before returning to the school.

MEMO is the local business organization formed in 1979 to promote “at home-downtown shopping” with Medfield’s merchants and employers. The first promotional event is held each September as Medfield day welcomes everyone home from the summer.

Joining in the holiday weekend’s activities will be many merchants holding open houses and sales, churches offering seasonal music and baked goods and families understanding just what makes this such a special community.  Everyone is invited to join MEMO for a fun start to this holiday season.

Fisher added the Medfield Lions Club is preparing for its annual Christmas tree sale.

"They’ll be starting the Sunday after Thanksgiving down at the parking lot," Fisher said. "There’s always good trees and it’s nice to spend locally and help our local [organizations]."
