Poll: Happy Halloween ... in November

Will you be celebrating Halloween and trick-or-treating in Medfield Friday?

Halloween postponed?  Scary!

When , many children thought town officials were playing a Halloween trick on them. When it was clear the decision was not a horror story conjured up by adults to frighten little children, Medfield’s good-spirited ghosts and goblins jumped into action making lemonade out of lemons.

“We still went to our friends and had a pre-buffet dinner for which everything was made and the kids just ran around,” said Jennifer Brady, whose son Zack was dressed as a ‘Military Guy.’ “We were disappointed. I felt it should have been a parent’s decision.”

Brady was not alone since many families () thought parents should have made the decision whether their neighborhood was safe enough to traverse – many children did trick-or-treat in their own neighborhoods Monday night – but that would have left out several children whose neighborhoods had no electricity as they tried to climb into their costumes, or no safe pathways as they tried to traverse sidewalks and roadways that were blocked by severed limbs, fallen trees or downed wires.

As the day unfolded and the tale of Halloween’s postponement made it around town, spook hungry boys and girls put the day’s bad ingredients into a cauldron, seasoned the brew with a list of surrounding towns that had NOT cancelled All Hallows’ Eve, and cooked up a new plan – to trick-or-treat in a neighboring town on Monday night then hit Medfield streets on Friday night.

because of the storm’s aftermath, but many elementary classroom parties were rescheduled later in the week, and middle school festivities (including dressing in costume and classroom ) were postponed to Friday. The annual Halloween parade at the was cancelled.

As an aside, several savvy mummies have seen this year’s eerie delay as a way to save money on seasonal decorations, costumes and candy, and are hoping the deals they scare up this week will make this year’s Halloween a day (or two) to remember.
