For Lord's Sign, Future is Uncertain

The Lord's sign is too large to fit into the interior redesign for the proposed Roche Bros. grocery.

The most popular sign in Medfield may end up in storage.

The Lord's sign will be displaced by the renovation of the former department store into a concept Roche Bros. grocery. The renovation cannot accommodate the sign, a Main Street fixture since 1959.

Selectman Richard DeSorgher reported on Monday that he had met with a small group of people concerned about the future of the iconic neon sign. Initially, there had been some hope that the Medfield Historical Society could take and display the sign. But the sign is 28 feet long, and the Historical Society building is just 24 feet.

The Kellys own the sign, the selectman said, and are under some pressure to remove it.

"Unless someone can come up with a 'rabbit in the hat' kind of a thing," DeSorgher reported, the sign will be stored on the Kelly family property.
