Area Seniors Enjoy Weekly Barbeques at The Center

This Wednesday (Aug. 9), will be the last summer barbeque at the Center. The final gathering will have a cruise theme to promote The Center's Bermuda cruise scheduled for June 1-8.

Wednesday summer barbeques at The Center have been very well-attended this year, in large part because of the many offerings that appeal to a wide audience.

“I think it’s successful because there are a lot of different activities happening at one time so people can decide what they would like to do,” said Roberta Lynch, Medfield’s Director of the Council on Aging at last week’s barbeque. “Also, it’s something fun to do on a Wednesday, in the middle of the week, and dinner is provided. We do the cooking and it’s a nice social atmosphere for everyone.”

More than 90 seniors attended last week’s barbeque, where they could enjoy laughter yoga, bingo, bocce, ballroom dancing, a lounge singer, dinner and/or a movie.

“I’ve been to every one of them this year,” said Dorothy Ruzzo of Medfield. “With all the activities, they get more people to attend.”

“I love it, I’ve come to four or five this year,” said Harry Evans of Halifax. “I like the dancing, that’s why we come and we come to see Phil and June [Burr].”

“It’s a great social,” said Phil Burr, a lifelong Medfield resident. “You meet different people from the community.  Different people have ties to different organizations, but everybody comes here for bocce and dancing and the other activities.”

“There’s something for everybody,” said his wife, June Burr.

Bill Pardi works the grill with Tony Filippelli, who also calls Bingo.

“Tonight I’ll probably cook close to 100 hot dogs,” said Pardi.  “We usually have 80 or 85 people on a Wednesday night. There are a lot of nice people; everybody’s really having a good time.”

The seniors credit Lynch for the success of the weekly gatherings as well as the other programs at the senior center.

“She is out of this world,” said Phil Burr. “She is so organized and enthusiastic with everything she does. The trips are great; people are always smiling when they come off the bus.”

Next week’s barbeque will be the last in this summer’s eight-week series and it will have a cruise theme, said Lynch, to promote next June’s trip to Bermuda on the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship.

Barbeques are open to all senior citizens. Cost is a requested $5 donation.
