Ten Gravestones in Vine Lake Cemetery Damaged by Hit and Run Driver

Sometime during the day or evening on June 27th, a driver, for an unknown reason, left Kingsbury Avenue in the Old Section of Vine Lake Cemetery, drove down a row of footstones and damaged five.  Continuing on, the driver made a U-turn, traveled down another row while damaging another five memorials.  The driver then exited the cemetery.

In all, 10 memorials were either damaged, fractured, or shattered.  A 2,000-pound marble obelisk was moved but remained on its base.

Many of these memorials had been repaired, cleaned, and reset by volunteers from Vine Lake Preservation Trust.  Five of the damaged ones had been reset just three weeks ago.

This incident was first discovered by Rob Gregg, president of Vine Lake Preservation Trust, in the course of preparing for last Saturday’s walking tour.  This vandalism was reported to the Medfield Police Department who investigated.  Automobile damage would be confined to the undercarriage and the driver- and passenger-doors.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Medfield Police Department.

“Our preservation volunteers will be back soon to restore these broken memorials,” said Gregg.  “They have much devotion and pride in their work and wish to make the cemetery dignified.”
