Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Needham 2013 Employee of the Year

Barbara Doherty, RN, of Medfield

Needham, MA – Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital (BID-Needham) is proud to announce that Barbara Doherty, RN, of Medfield is the hospital’s 2013 Employee of the Year.

“I am truly honored to have been nominated, especially by such esteemed colleagues,” said Barbara. “To work in an environment that feels like a second home for the past 14 years has been rewarding on so many levels. Being part of a small community hospital that continues to grow and gives exceptional and personal care is what I am most proud of.  I won't deny that winning is wonderful, but the true reward is working with such great people that really care about making our hospital the best it can be.”

Barbara was hired at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in September 1991 where she worked for the next four years. In December 1999, she started her career a BID-Needham working in the Emergency Department. Barbara was promoted to resource nurse in 2007 and was recognized with an Excellence in Clinical Leadership award that same year. The Clinical Leadership award recognizes her ability to continually demonstrate effective communication with members of her team, patients and their families. In June 2013, Barbara advanced to Clinical Nurse III, which recognizes Barbara’s continued career growth, clinical leadership and outstanding patient care.

“Barbara is committed and driven by her dedication and passion for the staff of the ED as well as every employee throughout the hospital,” said Sue Pacheco, RN, BSN, Director of Emergency Services. “Barb never turns down an opportunity to help whether it’s joining a committee, covering any role in the ED or organizing education for the employees. Everyone knows they can count on Barb. You can see the passion she has for her job every day.  We are so lucky to have Barb in the Emergency Department and I’m so happy that she has been recognized for all the hard work and energy she puts in every day.”

The Employee of the Year selection is based on peer nominations submitted to a committee which is asked to look at four major service attributes: customer service, reliability/ownership, professionalism and problem solving/initiative.

"Barb is an amazing nurse. She always goes above and beyond for our patients and our staff,” said Heidi Alpert, RN, MS. “Her influence goes beyond the Emergency Department as she makes a difference in all that she undertakes. I work closely with Barb on our Nurses' Week events; she brings such incredible energy, creativity and commitment to this week. To quote our Chief in the ED, 'She brings a unique positive aura to situations and inspires others to do the same'. She is truly the best."

This year’s Employee of the Year was announced at the hospital’s annual Employee Recognition Dinner on November 21. Several other employees were also honored for 5, 10, 15, 25, 35, 40, and 45 years of service.
