Rough Rugby

Get to know MHS's rugby club.

By Tim Sullivan

Boom! Crash!  These are the noises of a hard-hitting rugby player.  Rugby is a rough sport that is similar to football, and many people associate rugby with hard tackles, fast running and good sportsmanship. Medfield High School has its own rugby club.

Rugby originated in the United Kingdom.  There are two current sports that involve rugby, which are rugby league and rugby union.  The main difference between the rugby league and the rugby union is that the rugby league has a system of limited tackles whereas the rugby union does not.

This year’s captain of the MHS rugby team is Ed Warren.  Warren has been known to be a great leader and an intense athlete.  When asked what motivated him to be captain of the rugby team, he replied, “I am looking forward leading the team with many victories and good sportsmanship.  I look forward to achieving greatness.”

When I asked Warren if he had anything to say to kids who are going to be new to the sport, he said, “Be ready and rugged!”

“Well, I loved football, and I want to keep playing something similar to it.  I am looking forward to tackling again,”  said senior and varsity football player John Pendergast when he was asked why he was playing rugby.  “Everyone better be ready for this season; I am excited for big hits and big wins.  I am doing it for the boys.”

If you love to tackle and have a great time after school, sign up to play rugby. If rugby’s not for you, go show your support for the players.
