Historical Tour of Medfield State Hospital

Here are five things to know to help inform your day.

1. A free tour of the exterior of the buildings of Medfield State Hospital will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 8, led by Michael Taylor, chairman of the Medfield Historic District Commission and Richard DeSorgher, town historian. Taylor will talk about the buildings and the efforts to preserve them. DeSorgher will discuss the history of the hospital.

2. A major change in criminal justice: Gov. Deval Patrick has agreed to change the status of 17-year-olds charged with crimes. From now on, they will be charged as juveniles.

3. Nominations are being taken for the 2014 Medfield Volunteer of the Year, Youth Volunteer and Lifetime Achievement Award through the Medfield Foundation website.

4. The Kingsbury Mill Grist Mill will be open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, and a shuttle bus will be used to help get people to the site, which is on a narrow section of road. People can park nearby at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, and a mini-bus will take them to the site on regular rotations.

5. Save the Date: The Woodland Theatre Company will present Les Miserables on Oct. 4 through Oct. 6 at Medfield High School, with performances at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The tickets are $30.
