About this column:
This weekly column features an article from a member of the Medfield High School student newspaper, "The Kingsbury Chronicle." Faculty advisor Anne Malchodi submits student-generated content for publication on Medfield Patch.MHS Student Brian Gerson interviewed candidates running for Class President. As the Student Council officer elections came and went, the focus shifted towards Student Government elections. With two potential candidates who ran, students asked themselves a mind-shattering question: Should we keep our current President or elect a new one? Aaron Cohen ran for re-election, while Haley Kramer ran against him seeking her first and only term as Class President. Cohen has one year of experience as the class President, and Kramer has two years of experience as the Class Treasurer as well as one year…
On Friday, June 1, Medfield High School hosted its annual Class Day, where all students attend an assembly honoring the graduating seniors with academic awards as well as teacher appreciation awards. Here are some highlights from this year’s event (in no particular order): First, Mrs. Sabra won the Inspiration Award, which is given to the teacher whom the Senior Class feels inspired them to become better students and people. “For many members of the class of 2012, I was their English teacher on the first day of high school in grade 9 and on the last day of high school in grade 12. Over their …
Last month, before school let out, Medfield High School students elected five new Student Council officers for the 2012-2013 school year. All elected officers ran unopposed. The new officers will lead the council and will have most direct contact with the administration and faculty. Student Council representatives often come to the officers with ideas and suggestions for them to put into action in conjunction with Student Council advisor Ms. Jessica Safer. Junior Blake Brown, Student Council member for his three years at MHS, was elected as president. He will create agendas for all meetings…
During the week of May 7-11, the MHS Art Department displayed student work created throughout the school year at Medfield High School. The art show was located in the main lobby, on the balcony right above the stairs, and in the senior lounge, which overlooks the main entrance to the school. Every art class had work represented in the show, from Intro to Art to Advanced Placement Art. The only requirement for presentation was the student must have created the piece during this school year. Each class had its own little section where the works were displayed. The whole show was set up by…
From June 14-19 there will be many sleepless nights, lots of studying, and grumpy high schoolers. These are all signs of finals week at Medfield High School. Over the course of four days, each student takes as many as seven tests. These finals are either comprised of a full year’s material or a semester’s worth of information. The workload put on each student can feel immense and to some it is an overload. “In previous years I have been up to 1 a.m. studying for finals, and have seen affects on my grades as well as my well-being,” …
Recently, Medfield High School junior Joe Marie won the CDMASC vice president race. CDMASC stands for Central District Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. There are over 50 schools involved in the Central District, and Marie ran up against eight other talented students from these schools. I recently had a chance to sit down with Marie and ask him some questions about the victory and what it means for his political career. Remy Fragola (RF): What does this mean for your political career? Joe Marie (JM): It is a big step in terms of holding office at a regional level. Also, it should…
The Medfield High School softball team has turned in a solid season on the field, taking many Tri-Valley League teams by surprise. However, with a rainy spring, some practices had to be cancelled or held indoors. These indoor areas can often be cramped and restrict the kinds of drills that can be practiced on the field. Fortunately for the team, Sluggers Academy is a great location to have indoor practice. The facility has nine tunnels and an infield. The tunnels are separated by retractable nets that allow for even more space. It provides bats, balls, and pitching machines. Sluggers Academy …
“Produce an image translating your understanding of a significant moment in Paul Baumer’s narration in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, which seems to depict the truth about WWI, in your opinion.” This is the prompt that roughly 150 students from Ms. Libby Wiese and Mrs. Sarah Brown’s sophomore classes were faced with. If you’re a junior or senior, then you probably remember reading All Quiet and having to produce a graphic novel. This project consisted of hours spent up late at night stressing out over the amount of work that was required. After hearing complaints from previous …
For five Medfield High School seniors, the final countdown is complete. In lieu of completing their last high school quarter in their seven-class schedule, these students are currently in the creative process of their highly selective and demanding senior projects. The opportunity to create a project – which in the past has ranged from organizing the annual Spring Fest Concert to painting a mural in town – is open to all seniors, but few attempt to take on its rigor and independence. Those who decide to accept the challenge must submit their ideas to a board of teachers, counselors and …
The Medfield High School Senior Girls’ Tea is a Hannah Adams Women’s Club sponsored event that takes place every spring for the graduating females of Medfield High School. It is hosted at the home of a student, and is attended by around 80 students each year. This year’s tea will take place on May 15 at senior Meghan Keleher’s house. Girls dress up in their finest sundresses and pearls, and enjoy a formal afternoon sipping tea – or punch if the weather is too hot. It is marked as a time for the girls to reminisce about their time in the Medfield school system, and look towards the future. …
Towards the end of the second semester at Medfield High School, juniors and seniors taking sociology will be watching the movie Mean Girls to observe the behavior and roles of teenagers in a typical high school. Students taking this course learn about different cultures in society while studying how humans function in their own communities. One of the topics they look at is teenage life. The movie Mean Girls is about a home-schooled teenage girl who moves from Africa to an American suburb. She enrolls in a public high school and has to learn how to adapt to a new culture in a different …
In early February, AP European History students took part in a mock Week in Review newscast to supplement their learning of classical economic theorists and early socialist thinkers. The students each took on the role of thinkers such as Jeremy Bentham and Thomas Mathus, and one student acted as the newscaster, who fed discussion questions. When asked about her inspiration for the activity, teacher Ms. Emily Alland said, “Studying point of view is an imperative part of studying history.” She added that “identifying point of view” is an important part of the Advanced Placement test, which her …
Medfield High School’s Art Club, made up of students from all four grades, has been working for the past three months on a project that will benefit not one, but two schools in town. Aside from the high school having a project to keep the Art Club busy, the other school benefitting from this is the Memorial Elementary School on Adams Street. Hopefully by the end of this year, Memorial will have a large new mural hanging on one of the walls in the cafeteria. This mural will consist of 26 panels, all three-by-four feet in size. On each of these panels will be a letter of the alphabet, …
Ni hao! For the first time in the history of Medfield High School, students have the unique opportunity to learn the world’s most popular language from a Chinese resident. In past years, Mandarin class was taught by teacher Mrs. Batts – who also is fluent in Spanish. However, for the 2011-2012 school year, Ms. Li has traveled from her hometown of Bengbu, China to Medfield to teach Mandarin. She teaches two high school classes of 12 to 15 students and sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes in the middle school. Ms. Li, who majored in English in college, wanted to come teach in America to “…
How do you think you would feel if your teacher came to your house at night to give you a lecture on World War II? The juniors in Mrs. Melinda Lohan’s and Mrs. Julie Tevis-Finn’s World History II classes are about to find out. No, Mrs. Lohan and Mrs. Tevis-Finn will not be going to their students’ houses every night, but they will be trying a new method of teaching called “Reverse Instruction.” While the juniors are studying World War II, they will be given the lecture at home instead of the classroom, and they will do the activities they would normally have during homework time while in …
The Medfield High School boys' varsity lacrosse team won back-to-back state titles last season. It was a tremendous achievement in Medfield High School sports. However, after the season, the team faced turmoil when its head coach, Bob Aronson was let go. The reason for his dismissal is still unknown. The team’s new coaches, John Isaf and Mike Douglas, were assistant coaches of the team last season and while the Warriors may appear to be different from the outside with new head coaches, they are still the same hardworking team on the field. The team is led this season by senior captains Conor …
The Activities for Life class has become a popular choice for students at Medfield High School. Current freshmen and sophomores flock to the gym during their lunch period, eager to catch a glimpse of the class’s plan for the day. On the first day, Medfield High School Athletic Director and teacher, Mr. Jon Kirby, met with the class and together, they planned a week’s worth of activities. The activities go as follows: Dodge Ball Monday, Scurry Hockey Tuesday, Mat Ball Wednesday, Pickle Ball Thursday, and Fun Friday, where students have the freedom to choose their own activity. “Activities for …
This year, Medfield High School added an AP United States Government and Politics course to its curriculum for seniors. The course covers various topics of the political system, including Congress, the executive branch, constitutional rights, the judicial system, political history, and much more. Mr. Kevin Murphy is the newly hired teacher for both this course and US History classes. He has experience working within the American government and has served as a Foreign Service officer in Iraq, Chile, and Algeria. Upon entering his teaching position at MHS, Mr. Murphy had never taught an AP …
Beginning in February, Medfield High School's Spanish IV students have been preparing oral presentations about their lives, which will be presented throughout the semester during class. The title of the project, “Lo que me importa,” translates to “that which interests me.” Students have the opportunity to select three topics to speak about during their presentation: an important person in their lives, their favorite activity and a third topic of choice. According to Ms. Leori Seri, MHS Spanish teacher, it is a “department goal to promote speaking proficiency among our students.” The World …
This year, Medfield High School junior students in Mr. Murphy’s US History II classes took on a new technology challenge: creating a glog. A glog is an online poster. Pictures, videos, links, and text can be added to the page in order to make an eye-catching display. Students were separated into groups and assigned a different piece of pop-culture from the early 19th century. Topics included turn of the century fashion, the Sears & Roebuck catalog, and rising popularity of the Olympics. A prep day in the library was given in order to research topics and get used to the glog. The rest of the …
