MEDWAY – The weather was great, the event was fun, and the fundraising went on through the night – The Relay for Life of Medfield/Millis/Medway/Norfolk was a huge success.  Those in purple shirts represent being cancer survivors and each year the survivors are honored by taking the very first lap around the track and then invited into a dinner reception and this year was no exception.  In addition to walking the first lap, however, this year, each survivor was given a balloon and they were asked to let it go just before walking that first lap ... letting go of the balloon signified letting go…
WELLESLEY – Medfield has the best MIAA Division 2 girls' lacrosse team in the state. The Medfield High School girls' lacrosse team defeated Winchester, 10-9, Monday at Babson College in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 final to capture the team's first state championship in the program's history.  Medfield's Emily Zlevor led the offensive attack with five goals – three in the second half and Katelyn Noschese added three. Caroline Tschirch and Natalie Gill also netted goals for Medfield.  Gill was also strong on the draws Monday and Sarah Honan made several key saves in front of a solid …
This past Saturday, MEMO once again offered the community a trolley tour through town for the 20th annual Discover Medfield History Day. Medfield town historian, Richard DeSorgher, narrated the six, hour-long tours.  DeSorgher, with an extensive knowledge of Medfield's house history, was passionate and entertaining – as always. This was the 20th year that MEMO (Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization) offered this tour to the community of Medfield and each trolley appeared to be full to capacity. The theme this year was "Tragedy, Sorrow, Ghosts and History: Medfield's Oldest Houses Tell…
On Sunday night, thanks to the efforts hundreds of volunteers and five months of planning, the Medfield High School Class of 2012 celebrated graduation with the high school's 20th annual All-Night Graduation Party. "So many [volunteers] have made this great event possible," said Nancy Braverman, co-chair of the All-Night Graduation Party Committee. "Congrats to all the seniors." This year's theme was games as the Medfield High School cafeteria was decked out with scenes of Las Vegas, or "Med Vegas."  Planning for the event began in November and the decorating crew started weekly workshops in …
Sunday was a perfect day for 226 Medfield High School students. The weather cooperated as family and friends of Medfield High School seniors gathered at Calvin George Fisher Memorial Field to celebrate the Class of 2012's graduation Sunday afternoon. The only thing shining brighter than the afternoon sun were the 226 MHS seniors celebrating their accomplishments after four years of hard work as one chapter of their lives came to a close while the next opened with infinite possibilities. Medfield softball's storybook season continues. Playing in their first state tournament game in six years, the Warriors won their first game of the postseason – a 4-1 victory over Martha's Vineyard in the preliminary round of the MIAA D2 South Sectional state tournament. The day belonged to Jackie Flint, who was stellar on the mound for Medfield, striking out 10 batters and getting out of a number of jams throughout the game. Flint struck out the side in top of the fifth inning to escape a bases loaded jam – allowing one run in the inning – and proceeded to strike out five straight batters …
Medfield rebounded from a slow start against Marblehead with a strong second quarter in Friday's 12-7 first round victory to advance in the MIAA Division 2 East Sectional state tournament. Marblehead, the bracket's 11th seed, scored just 50 seconds into the game to take an early lead before Medfield's Matt Crowell netted two goals to give the Warriors its first lead of the game with 4:17 remaining in the first quarter. Marblehead managed to tie the game at two shortly after and the two teams remained tied at the end of one. From there, however, it was Medfield. Conor Roddy netted a hat trick …
The Medfield High School boys' lacrosse team opened its MIAA Division 2 state title defense with a 12-4 victory over No. 27 Walpole in Tuesday's D2 East Sectional preliminary round. "It was a great team effort, we got a lot of guys contributing," said Medfield co-head coach Mike Douglas. "Both ends of the field played well." Leading 2-1 midway through the second quarter, Medfield, the bracket's sixth seed, was in need of a spark. The Warriors' defense responded – frustrating Walpole's offense and converting transition into scoring. "I was pretty proud of our defensive guys," Douglas said. "…
Lt. Col. Todd M. Caruso of the United States Marine Corps, delivered Medfield’s Memorial Day Address Monday morning in front of his hometown community assembled around Baxter Park. Lt. Col. Caruso reminded those gathered around the park that Memorial Day is not about summer, barbecues and parades – though it is perfectly fine to celebrate our nation’s freedom with such things – but it is truly about remembering those who have served and who have died protecting our freedoms. Lt. Col. Caruso also told his hometown crowd to remember the family members and those who have made the ultimate …
Editor's note: Submitted by Medfield Public Library Adult Services Librarian Andrea Fiorillo. Medfield Reads hit the road for a trip to the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass. earlier this month. After reading about the adventures of Aaron Lansky in the book Outwitting History, forty community members boarded a charter bus, generously funded by the Friends of the Medfield Public and the IMLS, and set off for our own bookish adventure. It was a beautiful day for a field trip. On arriving at the Yiddish Book Center we were given a guided tour.  The Center works to rescue Yiddish and …
Earlier this week, Dunkin' Donuts emerged as the likely tenant for the former Friendly's building at 563 Main St. when Michael Cavallo, an owner of the popular coffee franchise, presented plans to Medfield's Historic District Commission. If the HDC issues Dunkin' Donuts a certificate of appropriateness – something that could happen as soon as its June 5 meeting with Cavallo and his representatives – then the applicant will likely file an application with the town for a building permit and a public hearing date would be set at that time.  So, if Dunkin' Donuts does indeed move into the former …

On a dreary Thrusday night at Vine Lake Cemetery, visitors walked through the Old Section of the cemetery guided by the 'Walk Among the Shadows' map and took notice of the many gravesites marked by luminary bags as part of the Medfield Cultural District's First Thursday series. Blue luminary bags lined the walking paths in the cemetery and gold bags marked the gravesites of Medfield's Civil War veterans.  The walking tour was a second in a series by the Vine Lake Preservation Trust to commemorate our nation's 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Medfield community welcomed spring and the start of youth baseball and softball Sunday with a parade and opening ceremonies at Metacomet Park to celebrate 60 years of Little League in town. Family, friends and community members who support Medfield Youth Baseball and Softball were in …

On Patriots' Day in Medfield, under a hot sun and 85 degree temperatures, author Samuel A. Forman stood near the gravesite of Mercy Scollay in Vine Lake Cemetery.  Forman was dressed in period militia uniform and had just returned from the Battle Green in Lexington. He spent the morning in Lexington as a Minuteman reenactor, battling the British.  "I am sad to report that we lost to the British again; for the 237th time," he said. Forman is a physician, historian, educator, and author of "Dr. Joseph Warren: The Boston Tea Party, Bunker Hill, and the Birth of American Liberty." As part of the …
