What Advice Would You Give Incoming High School Freshmen?

With school starting in less than a month, a new crop of freshmen will begin their high school careers.

As the calendar flips to August, thoughts start to turn to the first day of the new school year.

And when school resumes next month, a brand new crop of freshmen will begin the wild, four-year (in most cases) journey that is high school.

So we pose the question: What advice would you offer to the incoming Class of 2016?

Think of the next 4 years as a video game. Create yourself into the Hero you want to be to reach your ultimate goal of education, graduation and preparation for the next game: getting job skills, college, etc. You need to arm yourself with good health, supportive mentors (family, teachers) and encouraging friends. You are still growing. Power up with sleep, nutrious food and water. Avoid pitfalls like couch potato syndrome, alcohol, drugs, smoke, stupid sex. There will be obstacles along the way. Dealing with them without causing more problems gives you life skill power. The training wheels are off now. You have a learner's permit to proceed with your path in life. Choose wisely, and carry on.

Enjoy. Be involved in as many activities as possible. Time goes by way to fast. Remember, this will be the last time you will be "fairly" treated. The days of being equal with others will come to an end w/graduation. The "real" world won't give a damn about you unless you are properly prepared. All the "protection" mom & dad gave you will be thrown out the window. If you fail a test, get over it. It wasn't the teacher's fault, it was your fault. Don't like it, tough. The "real" world won't care either. Learn to cope, you certainly will need this skill, probably more than one realizes. Enjoy the last of your childhood.
