Poll: Whose Jersey Will You Wear Super Bowl Sunday?

Which Patriots jersey will you be sporting on Super Sunday?

You can tell a lot by the jersey a person wears.

Most of us wear the jerseys of our favorite players. Some of us just throw on a jersey with little regard as to who it is, past or present, as long as it supports the team you are rooting for. And some of us - yes, you know who you are - believe the jersey being worn brings your team luck and in some cosmic way, aids in the final outcome of the game.

I openly admit to you all, I have a problem ...

"Hi, my name is Jeremie and I have a lucky jersey."

When former Medfield resident and Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe collided with Jets linebacker Mo Lewis in Week 2 of the 2001-2002 NFL season, everything changed.

The Patriots organization changed, the NFL, in some ways, changed, Bledsoe's career changed ... and my choice of jersey changed.

I quickly became a Tom Brady fan when he took over for Bledsoe – I used to be a big football card collector and had followed Brady's career at Michigan, as I did with a lot of upcoming rookies, trying to strike gold and find the next best rookie to start collecting. I knew a little bit about Brady when he was drafted in the sixth round and was excited to see if he could turn the Pats around when he was named the team's starting quarterback in September, 2001.

Obviously, he did.

My support of Brady took another step on Christmas Day, 2001 when my parents bought me his jersey. Home blue. A jersey never looked so good.

I threw it over my head and wore it proudly that day ... and I've worn it proudly for every Patriots game since. It's my Sunday best ... my lucky jersey.

Sure, it's seen its share of losses – some of them heartbreaking – but it has also seen plenty of success. Here's a few facts about when I wear my Brady jersey.

  • The Patriots are 140-42 when I wear "the jersey."
  • The Patriots have won three Super Bowls when I wear "the jersey" ... they've lost one but let's not get into that.
  • The Pats have had good fortune (luck?) in the playoffs when I wear my jersey. The "tuck rule" was introduced to football fans in January, 2002 and Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff summoned his inner Ray Finkle in the AFC Championship game against Baltimore two weeks ago to help put the Pats back in the Super Bowl.

My Brady jersey has been on my back every Sunday – some Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays as well – during football season for the past 10 years. It has seen the 21st Century's only dynasty in the NFL and it will be on my back again come Super Sunday when the Pats take on the New York Giants.

Here's hoping "the jersey" has a little more magic left in it to avenge the gut-wrenching loss four years ago in Super Bowl XLII.

So Medfield, we want to know ...
