POLL: Do you think snakes as pets should be legal in Massachusetts?
On Sunday, a python slithered away from its yard in Plymouth. It was caught on Tuesday after biting a neighbor.
A Plymouth man let his 11-foot python named "Al" out for some air on Sunday.
The snake slithered away and was not seen again until Tuesday when it was captured by environmental police after biting a neighbor.
In Massachusetts, it is legal to have a snake as a household pet though some towns (including Plymouth) have a local bylaw requiring snakes over four feet long be registered with the town.
Environmental police said there could be a $100 fine for not registering the reptile.
Would you welcome a snake -- python or otherwise -- in your neighborhood?

Mass has VERY encompassing laws in regards to reptiles. Chill out people. Burms, Retics and Anacondas are not allowed by general keepers, most to own these require permits, which require an inspection. MA has VERY responsible and ligical reptile laws.

In 2011, dogs were responsible for 31 fatal attacks in America, primarily to their owners. Non-venomous snakes were responsible for none. You are safer living next to a person with a 7ft boa than you are next to a dog owner.

Yes, snakes should be allowed as pets. Dogs bite people every day. But we still allow them as pets. The owner is in fault just like a dogs owner is in fault if a dog bites someone. Don't hurt everyone Because snakes are misunderstood.

Most RESPONSIBLE reptile owners do not take their snakes out for "air". I do not believe all reptile owners should be forced to have their rights stripped because a few irresponsible people. There are HUNDREDS more dog bites per year than there are snake bites. Should dogs be allowed in Massachusetts? Let's keep things in perspective.

I'm a snake breeder in Springfield... been on the news, in the papers, etc for positive snake related things... I cannot believe this is even a poll. This state has very tight laws on reptiles, and are enforced well. I hope this doesn't start something in the state, because I will gladly pull out all the stops and fight for what I have worked for my entire life!

4.5 million people were bitten by dogs last year. Of that number, 850,000 required professional medical attention. Millions are spent treating bites. Between 31 and 35 people are killed by dogs every year. Based on these statistics alone, pet dogs are inherently dangerous and should be immediately banned. Pet snakes killed no one last year.

Yes, Snakes make great pets. Quiet, non-allergenic, small (usually) and low maintanence. A great pet for our modern busy lives.

Banning all snakes would not only take away the animals of those who can properly care for larger snakes, but also ban harmless snakes such as corn an king snakes.

Banning these is not the answer. Not to mention it will hurt many small home base businesses, that rely on that income. I to breed and sell reptiles as a home base business here Connecticut. Also what about all the dog attacks throughout the US????

I think Regs are ok to keep people in check. I think RESPONSIBLE reptile owners with large reptiles would agree.not everyone should own a 15 + foot snake but if they do.A permit my be good for all involved.
