The Trends

Overall, there seemed to be a major disconnect between the casualness of the hair, the barely-there makeup and the elegance of the dresses and jewelry. For a night as big as this, hair and makeup should look done! The stand-out colors of the night were red on the lips and emerald green everywhere else.

We can’t forget that this night isn’t just about the women! Many of the men stepped up this year with a gelled-back dandy-boy look and facial hair that couldn’t have been more sexy and sophisticated!

The Women:

The Bun: Angelina Jolie’s classic bun and stand-out makeup that included to-die-for red lips showcased the best of Hollywood glamour.

The Bob: Jodie Foster’s straight, soft golden blonde locks were shaped into a great mod-bob with lots of movement and perfectly framed her jaw line.

The Chignon: Emma Stone’s low chignon was so appropriate for the evening. The deep and rich brown tone went stunningly with her blue/grey metallic eye shadow and smoky under eye.

The Ponytail: Juliana Margulies’ classic and perfectly taught ponytail sat at just the right height. She is a great example of how to make a ponytail work, with plum makeup and soft emerald earrings that were the perfect finishing touches.

The Color: Diane Lane wins the award for best color with her chocolate brown tresses, which she wore beautifully with a deep side-part, creating a soft and feminine look.

The Men:

Jake Gyllenhaal stole the show with his not-so short hair slicked to the side and just enough facial hair to ooze masculinity while still looking polished and fit.

Misses

The Headband: The idea of Charlize Theron’s low side chignon with curls was good, but the execution didn’t work. Her headband was a disaster, and it’s too bad because she rocked that gown! Michelle Williams also opted for a headband, which made her look like she was headed to the gym rather than an awards show. She could have brought her cute pixie cut to another level by adding volume or some platinum pieces.
