Bob Luttman Leads the Pack of Medfield Volunteers of the Year

On Sunday, Luttman will be honored along with Youth Volunteer of the Year Deirdre Walsh, for their volunteer efforts by the Medfield Foundation.

Bob Luttman was one of the first people I met when I came to Medfield.  I was investigating the move of the Lowell Mason House and there he was, leading the charge to save the childhood home of a man whose name (should be) synonymous with the introduction of music education in the public school system.

He has been a driving force and tireless worker behind saving the house that was nearly destroyed last year, including rallying the troops on winter weekends to shovel snow out from the newly-poured foundation at the Green Street address to where the house will be moved.

Then, I was interested in learning more about the Medfield Historical Society, and there he was to open the door on a Saturday morning and walk me through the archives and documents of the Historical Society, all the while peppering the hard copies with an oral history that only a longtime resident and committed volunteer could possibly have.

When getting to know the town, making connections, and gathering story ideas, I was told on more than one occasion that I needed to sign up for a weekly e-mail reminder of community events and calendar updates called “Monday Morning Medfield News” – a service provided by Luttman and enjoyed by hundreds of subscribers.  I know I, and others, look forward to its arrival in our Inbox every week.

When talking to organizers of this year’s charity auction at the First Parish Church, I learned that “Bob was being Bob” when he was at a meeting for one purpose but pushed the Proverbial envelope just a bit further “as only Bob can do” to secure some sports memorabilia that helped increase the auction’s bottom line.

Luttman serves on the Board of Library Trustees, the town's Technology Study Committee, the Medfield Youth and Community Collaborative, and was one of the founding directors of the Medfield Foundation which, according to its website was created in 2001 to raise private monies for public purposes in the Town of Medfield and has raised over $1.2 million thus far – to further enhance all the town has to offer.

Luttman is one of Medfield’s biggest cheerleaders -- with his hands in seemingly All Things Medfield – so it is no surprise to me that he has been selected as this year’s Medfield Volunteer of the Year.

On Sunday, Luttman will be honored along with Youth Volunteer of the Year Deirdre Walsh, for their volunteer efforts.  Other celebrated residents include Kim Agricola, Judy Ambrose, Kathleen Cahill, Lisa Dolan, John Filip, Ron Griffin, Nicki Gustafson, Susan Holbrook, Chris Kaldy, Jeanne McKenzie, Laurie Nealon, Harold Pritoni, Katherine Quinn, Betty Sanders, Jeanne Sanfilippo, Shonda Schilling, and Susan Wilson.

The event is sponsored by the Medfield Foundation and recognizes Medfield residents who make Medfield a great place to live.

The ceremony will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Center at Medfield on Icehouse Road.
